Autism Spectrum Disorder Vocational Programme

We offer people with Autism Spectrum Disorder, who are looking for a suitable training position, apprenticeship programmes. Due to their problems with social interaction, their unusually strong interests and repetitive patterns of behaviour, integration of this group of people into the labour market is rarely successful.

We take a new approach by creating an internal business culture of learning and working that takes into account the needs of this group of people and accompanies them from vocational orientation right through to successful completion of their apprenticeship exams. We want the apprentices to develop in a vocational setting under near-actual conditions. The concept of inclusion is at the heart of this programme.

Since 2012, AQUA Mühle has been developing the Autism Spectrum Disorder vocational programme focusing on:
  • a suitable apprenticeship position tailored to each individual person’s needs
  • coaching (prior to, during and following the apprenticeship including during transition periods)
  • communication between company/school/family/apprentice
  • if required, ensuring alternatives to standardised school attendance

Currently, there are 11 adolescents who are supported in their apprenticeship, six of which work for AQUA Mühle. The other five work for Vorarlberg-based companies. They chose the following trades:
  • Company services
  • Office clerk
  • Information technology
  • Pastry chef
  • Warehouse logistics
  • Metal work
  • Machining

Support offered by AQUA Mühle:
  • Coaching
  • Contact with the school and the company
  • Tutoring regarding school subjects
  • Learning support
  • Regular individual performance assessment
  • Interventions aimed at providing support, information and guidance (clarification, assistance, workplace design)
  • Networking

Goals of the Autism Spectrum Disorder vocational programme:
  • Integration into the labour market
  • Participation and inclusion in society
  • Development of a sustainable social network
  • Individual guidance and support
  • Enhancement of skills necessary to lead one’s life as independently as possible
  • Enhancement of skills necessary to deal with the tasks of everyday life
  • Transition to a service offering less intensive guidance and support or achieving a state where they can handle the tasks and problems of everyday life independently

We are convinced that, with this service and the substantial inclusion it offers, we have set an example in Austria and on an international level. The overall positive feedback from the apprentices and their surroundings, as well as the fact that there are hardly any dropouts, show that we are on the right track to improve the vocational inclusion of this group of people in a sustainable way.
